The Daviess County Commissioners only had a few items on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting. Terri Kelso, representing the Semiquincentennial Committee, requested the use of an area around the courthouse or the government center for an artist to paint a mural commemorating the nation’s 250th birthday. Kelso said the artist will paint the mural in public at various places throughout the county during the month of June. All commissioners supported the project. The commissioners also approved a request from Community Corrections to apply for funds from the Remnant Opioid Settlement and a request from Airport Manager Erika Burkemper to repair and replace the airport’s courtesy cars damaged in the hailstorm in March. One car will be repaired, and the second car, a 23-year-old Impala, will be replaced by another used vehicle. The commissioners also approved a request from West Boggs Park for a credit card but lowered the limit on the card from the requested $12,000 to $5,000. At the end of the meeting the commissioners discussed the letter of intent to support the YMCA construction project. After the discussion the commissioners voted to retain the original wording, setting the county participation at “$4 million to $5 million” with funds coming from the GPC TIF district. The commissioners also discussed some dissatisfaction with the current Code Red emergency alert system. Speaking about the system, Sheriff Gary Allison said the former contractor had been sold, without the county’s knowledge, to another company. The sheriff said while the current alert system is not up to past standards, changing vendors would require a lapse in coverage, and that is not advisable during the storm season. The next commissioners’ meeting is scheduled for May 12.
