Indiana drivers will continue to see relief at the gas pump after Governor Mike Braun announced an extension of the state’s gas tax suspension. In a release issued May 6, Braun said he is extending the emergency energy declaration for another 30 days, allowing the continued suspension of the 7% gasoline use tax. In addition, the governor is now suspending the gasoline excise tax, a move officials say will more than double the savings for Hoosiers. The extension represents the longest period the governor can continue the gas tax holiday without action from the legislature. State officials estimate the combined tax suspensions could provide about a 12.4% reduction in the average price of gasoline in Indiana. He also announced plans to increase mileage reimbursement rates for state employees who use personal vehicles for work, with more details expected in the future.
