It’s the last time the sound of car engines will grace the dirt track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Thursday marked the final Hoosier Hundred USAC race on the track. It had been an annual tradition at the fairground right around the time of the Indianapolis 500 since 1953.

Famous drivers such as AJ Foyt and MArio Andretti have run in the race in the past.

People came from all over to get one last glimpse of the race, some as far as Wisconsin.

Earlier this year the Indiana State Fair commission decided it would turn the mile long track from dirt to crushed limestone for more year-round events and more space for parking. USAC cars cannot run on crushed limestone.

“We’ll probably take the Hoosier Hundred somewhere else in the state of Indiana,” said Adam Mackey, the operations manager for Track Enterprises who promotes the race.
