The Daviess County Commissioners have agreed to help the City of Washington by providing 1/3 of the match required by the State for the Business 50 rebuild through Washington.
Washington Mayor Joe Wellman had asked for the County’s support with the long-term project. Wellman said the State is financing 87% of the project, with the local match being $3 million. Wellman pointed out that 37% of the county’s residents live in Washington, and that most other county residents use the road to access businesses and professional and government services.
Wellman also said that the condition of the road is important to the economic development of the county. Commissioner Michael Taylor noted the rebuilding of Business 50 would be a great thing for the County and the City, saying “the road has been in dire straits for years”. Commissioners President Nathan Gabhart called the road “the most productive piece of asphalt in the County”.
The Commissioners agreed to provide $250,000 a year for the next four years to help with the local match.
