The Martin County Historical Society, in partnership with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will honor 28 soldiers from the 19th Illinois Infantry who died in an 1861 train wreck east of Shoals. A new monument and interpretive panel will be unveiled during a special event on Saturday, September 20 at the Martin County Museum. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a Civil War camp with reenactors, a President Lincoln presenter, and possibly a Civil War general. A dedication ceremony, including a rifle salute, will take place at 2 p.m. For those interested in learning more, Taylin Allen of the Sons of Union Veterans will host a display and Q&A on the tragedy at the museum on Thursday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
