Indiana’s first case of H5 avian flu in 2023 was reported by the Indiana Board of Animal Health. The hobby flock of 23 birds in Posey County tested positive for the virus on Wednesday. The report was filed due to a “significant” number of the birds passing away. The location of the flock in Posey County has not been disclosed. The board said that hobby flocks and commercial bird farms in the area will be tested for the virus. Indiana is still considered “influenza-free” since the infected flock did not sell birds or eggs. Symptoms of H5 avian flu include sudden, unexplained death, lethargy, misshapen eggs, or decreased egg production. Bird sickness or death can be reported to the USDA Health Birds Hotline at 866-536-7593.
