The 20 to 25 tornadoes that hit Indiana have mandated a need for help in several counties, and now Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security is set up to help people hit by the worst of the storms.
“It’s the worst of my career,” said DHS head Joel Thacker on WISH TV’s All Indiana Politics this weekend. He likened some of the damage to the Henryville tornado, an EF4 that hit in 2012. But, he said, in Sullivan and Johnson counties, one-stop shops are staffed with people from several state agencies.
“We’re trying to make it as easy as possible to come to one location to start to get back on track a little bit and meet some of those basic needs,” he said.
Thacker added that much of the focus will be on people who are underinsured or uninsured.
“They’re there to help folks who didn’t have insurance.” “What are some options?”
Thacker said federal agencies are there to provide help with housing needs through individual assistance. He said they could also help with child care needs and help people in a bind because their car was destroyed.
