A Vincennes man is in jail after leading deputies on a high speed chase through northeastern Daviess County. The Times Herald tells us that deputies identified the driver of the motorcycle as Stephen Hart, 54, of Vincennes.

The Daviess County Sheriff’s Department reports the chase began at 12:27 this morning when a deputy attempted to make a traffic stop near the intersection of Main Street and U.S. 50 in Montgomery.

Hart did not stop and instead began to try to get away from the officers. The motorcycle took off on Main Street to Third Street and then pulled onto CR 650 E., heading north. Hart turned onto CR 900 N. and then went north on CR 675E before losing control and crashing the bike near CR 1000 N.

Five deputies joined in the chase, which lasted around 12 minutes and covered more than 10 miles.

Officers say they measured more than 95 feet of skid marks at the scene. Hart was taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital with complaints of leg, back, ankle, and hand pain.

“He was taken to the hospital and they found no significant injuries,” said Sheriff Gary Allison. “The deputies brought him to the jail and found several different drugs on him, including just under 200 grams of methamphetamine.”

Besides the meth, authorities located a small amount of marijuana and some pills.

Hart is being held in the Daviess County Jail without bond on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, resisting law enforcement and being a habitual traffic offender.
