Burning Roadside Ditches Could Cause Damage to Infrastructure

daviess-county-highway

The Daviess County Highway Department is asking residents to be mindful of burning brush near roadside ditches.
The department asks residents living adjacent from roadways to avoid burning vegetation in roadside ditches within 10 feet of poly coated culverts, high density polyethylene pipe culverts, or PVC tile outlets.
The highway department says they understand that burning is an effective way to control dead plant growth, however, it can cause serious damage to roadway drainage infrastructure.
The department says the average replacement costs can range from $5,000 to $20,000 and sometimes more due to manpower, backfill material, and time.
The department says the county will seek reimbursement for intentionally started fires that cause damage to drainage infrastructure.
