Mary Jane Horton, 87, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022, at 6:25 am in Vincennes, Indiana. She was born on Tuesday, February 20th, 1934, in Lawrence County Illinois to the late Virgil Wilbur and Ruby Ella (Neeley) Varner.

Mary was raised by the late Alice Pearl Hoh, her grandmother, after her parents died. Alice Pearl was a great influence in her life.

Mary lived at and attended the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1954, going straight to work for Good Samaritan Hospital and was there for 54 years before retiring as a nursing supervisor. Mary was part of the last class prior to Vincennes University opening their School of Nursing. Later in life she would be recognized as an Honorary Graduate of the Vincennes University School of Nursing.

A devote Christian, Mary loved God and her Bible. She especially enjoyed supporting the Vincennes Free Methodist Missionary Group. Her friends and family will forever remember Mary as a family-oriented woman who would do anything for anyone. She made a career out of helping people, but it was more than that, it was Mary’s calling.

A lover of all animals, Mary had a soft spot in her heart for dogs and cats. After raising her children, the family joke is that Mary’s kids become the numerous animals that she had over the years.

Mary is survived by her children Jo Ella “Jody” Warrick and her husband Dennis of Smyrna, TN., Judith “Judy” Ann Brewer of Smyrna TN., William “Bill” Horton of Smyrna, TN., and James “Jim” Darrell Horton and his wife Deborah of Berne, IN.; along with 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit Mary and her family on Friday, January 14th, 2022, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Free United Methodist Church located at 1423 Nth 4th St. Vincennes, IN 47591. A funeral service will be held following the visitation at 1 pm at the church with Pastor Irwin Bales officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vincennes Free Methodist Missionary Fund at the church. Goodwin-Sievers is Funeral Home is privileged and honored to be entrusted with the care of Mary.
