(NETWORK INDIANA) Iran’s decision to fire missiles at bases in Iraq may actually lead to de-escalation of military action action, said Rep. Larry Bucshon, the Republican represents southwest Indiana in Washington DC. He believes Iran’s response was a matter of necessity.
“The Iranians last night, had to respond. to save face They had pretty much ramped up their rhetoric in their own country on state-sponsored television and radio and their social media outlets,” said Bucshon. “The rockets that they sent didn’t hit anything substantial.
He said he does not believe the president or the American people want war.
“What you’re hearing when people are talking about war, these are anti-Trump politicians and media, national news media, honestly I think shamefully trying to get political points out of this situation.”
Bucshon said he hopes that not only will Iran de-escalate the military situation, but will also be willing to talk again about ending any nuclear weapon development.
He said keeping U.S. troops in Iraq is not necessary.
“We drove ISIS out. We’re there training Iraqi troops to defend themselves. So, we’re not trying to have a permanent presence in Iraq.”
Rep. Jim Banks (R-3rd District), who represents the Ft. Wayne area, said he believes the president has acted with wisdom and restraint. Both men support the president’s actions in last week’s air strike.
“There’s an unfolding school of thought that the Iranians intentionally missed Americans because they know that if they would have harmed or killed American troops there would be hell to pay,” said Banks. “They know that our military budget is 37 times the Iranian military budget. They know that their economy is on the brink of collapse and they can’t withstand more pressure from the United States.”
