Petitions available today to sign to get a school building project referendum on the November ballot

The Washington Community School Corporation is working to get a referendum on the November Municipal Election Ballot for school patrons to vote for or against a tax increase to help pay for a school building project.

Before that referendum can be put on the ballot, patrons have to approve putting the referendum there.  500 signatures are needed by tomorrow to get that done.  Petitions are available at the school administration office until 3:30 today and at Griffith Elementary and the Junior High Gate 8 until 6 tonight.   If you can’t be at the locations call 812-254-5536 to have a petition brought to you.

The corporation is proposing a 34 million dollar middle school for grades 5 to 8 including a field house and football field.  The tax rate would be .48 cents per $100 assessed valuation.  That means a home worth about $98,900 would pay nearly $155 a year in school taxes.

The need for the school is based primarily on overcrowded classrooms and projected continued growth.
