(NETWORK INDIANA) Another virus transmitted by ticks has popped up in Indiana.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed two cases of Heartland virus in Indiana over the last two years. The patients that were diagnosed with the virus were from southern Indiana.
Heartland virus, which was recently discovered, is thought to be transmitted by ticks, and the most common signs and symptoms are flu-like symptoms with a fever and decreases in blood cells that are important in blood clotting and fighting infection.
Ticks in Indiana have also recently been found with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, which killed a two-year-old from Plainfield earlier this year. Ticks also carry Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis.
More than 200 cases have been reported since 2016.
