Governor Mike Pence faces tight deadline to withdraw if selected as VP

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence faces a tight deadline to withdraw from the state’s gubernatorial race if he is selected to be Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick.

State law dictates that Pence cannot appear on the ballot as both a vice presidential nominee and a candidate for governor. The first-term Republican governor must withdraw by noon on July 15.

Pence met with the presumed Republican presidential nominee over the weekend and is one of several people Trump is considering.

The Indiana Republican Party would select a new gubernatorial candidate to replace Pence if he withdraws.

People with direct knowledge of Trump’s vetting process say others being considered are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions and Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst.
