The Republican field to succeed U.S. Sen. Dan Coats in 2016 appears to be set with two sitting Indiana congressmen and a former state GOP chairman vying for the public’s support.
U.S. Rep. Todd Young, the fundraising leader, is making the first major move by purchasing ads to run during the Republican presidential primary debate that’s expected to be widely viewed.
Young’s campaign says the $10,000 ad buy will run across Indiana. Political observers say the move is shrewd politically and could give Young early name recognition among Republican voters.
Young’s rivals are reacting coolly to the ad buy. U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman’s campaign says he’s the only tested conservative in the race. The campaign for former Indiana GOP Chairman and Vincennes native Eric Holcomb says money isn’t everything.
