Baby Box legislation proposed

Indiana lawmakers are tabling a proposal that would allow “baby boxes” in places such as fire stations so mothers in crisis could anonymously surrender their children.

The move comes amid a backlash from advocates of safe haven laws.

The bill passed the House last month and is scheduled for a Senate committee hearing Wednesday. Health committee chairwoman Sen. Patricia Miller said Tuesday that she expects the bill to be assigned to study committees for more evaluation.

Indiana law already allows women to surrender newborns without prosecution provided the child hasn’t been harmed. Supporters say the boxes would help those who can’t face surrendering a child in person.

The boxes would be equipped with sensors that would set off alarms when the box is opened and when weight is detected inside.
