A local internet provider has received over $1.3 million in federal funding to increase broadband speeds.

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch announced Friday that the money allocated to RTC Communications of Washington is part of $29 million handed out across the state.  The money for RTC will cover over 1200 locations.

In her announcement, Crouch said that un-served and underserved rural areas in our state need high-speed, reliable Internet in order to keep Indiana’s economy thriving. Crouch said that the FCC is looking to close the digital divide between rural and urban America and has awarded almost $1.5 billion to un-served areas in 45 states. Fifty-three percent of the homes and businesses selected for coverage will receive download speeds of at least 100 megabits per second.

Also receiving funding in Southern Indiana were Orange County REMC getting over 10.2 million for over 4000 locations and Perry-Spencer Rural Telephone who received over 1.1 million for about 360 locations.
