The Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation District has gotten a $45,000 grant to use for improvements for the Veal, Aikman and Hawkins Creek watersheds.

The money comes from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife, and is part of over $1.2 million set across the taste.

The Washington Times Herald  http://www.washtimesherald.com/    says the 45 thousand is a follow up to a $30,000 grant the county received to to begin a cost-share program with area farmers to cut down on erosion and sedimentation in the area streams. Conservation and Livestock Technician Ryan Harner with the Soil and Water Conservation District told the newspaper the new grant will help continue the cover-crop and no-till projects; it will also have the district looking at more long-term solutions to run-off and sedimentation issues in the watersheds.

The Daviess County project is one of 33 in the state in 25 counties, encompassing watersheds of 36 lakes and streams.

Some other projects include creating habitat elements to provide shelter for fish and use bio-engineering techniques to address bank erosion on rivers and lakes.
