IU Associate Dean accused of assault, blame game starts for the reason for Carrier’s departure, Indiana cargo handling tops 12 million….

IU ASSAULT INVESTIGATION

Indiana University is set begin reviews of 18 sexual misconduct cases following allegations that the school’s associate dean of students sexually assaulted a woman at a December conference. A woman has accused Jason Casares of sexually assaulting her at a conference in Texas. Casares has been placed on administrative leave and has denied the allegations.

DRUG SENTENCES

A proposal to mandate tougher sentences for some convicted drug dealers is set for consideration by an Indiana Senate committee. The Senate criminal law committee is scheduled to hear testimony Tuesday on the bill. It would require judges to impose prison sentences of at least 10 years for those dealing more than 10 grams of illegal drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamine.

CARRIER BLAME GAME

Indiana political leaders are casting blame in different directions for a company’s decision to shut down a 1,400-worker factory in Indianapolis and move production to Mexico. Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly says he came away from a discussion with Carrier executives convinced the company is chasing lower labor costs. Republican Governor Mike Pence cited federal regulations as contributing to the decision.

CARGO HANDLING TOPS 12 MILLION

The company that operates Indiana ports says the three ports handled a record 12.2 million tons of cargo in 2015. It was the first year in the Ports of Indiana’s history that the state’s three ports handled more than 12 million tons. The Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon handled 6.6 million tons of cargo. The Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor and the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville each handled 2.8 million tons of cargo.
