State Senator Mark Messmer of Jasper is supporting some bills in the legislature that deal with religious freedom.

Messmer says Senate Bill 101 written by Senator Dennis Kruse of Auburn would  protect religious freedom by establishing a strict level of scrutiny.  He says it will make  sure that all state and local laws are tailored to avoid burdening religious freedom whenever possible.  Messmer says  the action is unfortuantely needed because, many people of faith and religious institutions across  Indiana and the nation feel like their religious liberty is under attack by the government.

Messmer says he also supports Senate Bill 127, authored by State Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle.  He says ht  aligns Indiana law with federal law by allowing religious institutions that sign contracts with the state or local government to give a hiring preference to individuals of the same faith.

Both bills continue to make their way through the General Assembly.
