National Fire Protection Association offers tips to families for Halloween fire safety

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than 770 home structure fires occurred each year between 2013 and 2017 due to Halloween decorations. The National Fire Protection Association has offered some tips for families to follow as they celebrate the spooky season.
They recommend using battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-o-lanterns and they recommend staying away from long-trailing fabric when choosing costumes. They also say it is important to teach children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns using real candles inside them.
They advise to keep all flammable decorations, such as dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper, away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters. The National Fire Protection Association asks residents to remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks fire escape routes.
