Sixty percent of the almost thirty eight percent of registered voters who voted in the Washington Community School District said no to referendum on a middle school building project.
The question asked if the school corporation should issue bonds or enter into a lease to finance a 38 million dollar project that would increase property taxes a little over .48 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The measure was defeated in all 17 precincts voting on the issue. A total of 4,446 voters turned out to vote on the referendum 2,726 said no and 1.720 said yes.
The project cannot appear on the ballot again as it is now for two years.
Alex Frederick with the Vote No group told us he was pleased and excited about the vote count. He says he believes the no voters were more persuaded by facts and also believe there is a better and cheaper way to address the issues presented as a need for a building project.
