The Daviess County Commissioners covered several updates and approvals during their meeting Tuesday morning. Commissioners approved the minutes from the February 24 meeting and received updates from the county highway department. Highway officials reported progress on several projects, including a roundabout planned at Old U.S. 50 and County Road 150 West and ongoing countywide bridge inspections. Commissioners also approved a supplemental agreement related to bridge inspection services. Officials expect to receive more than $330,000 back from CSX related to deposits made during the Montgomery Bridge project. Commissioners also discussed the coal company’s ongoing work on the run-around road tied to the County Road 200 North closure. Highway officials said the road is believed to be about 95 percent complete, but recent rain has delayed final work. The county is continuing to hold the company’s bond until the road is finished and the company is back in compliance on required payments. In a separate highway update, officials said they are continuing to explore the possibility of widening Montgomery Road for buggy traffic, similar to the buggy lanes added on Cannelburg Road. County leaders said more discussion with Amish families along the corridor and a review of possible funding sources will be needed before any decision is made. Highway Superintendent Chris Winkler also discussed a potential purchase of a used full-width chip spreader from Gibson County that could improve road maintenance efficiency. Commissioners indicated they are open to exploring the purchase if funding allows. In other business, the board approved an amendment to the county’s EMS contract with Daviess Community Hospital, renewed the Conservation Club’s agreement to serve as an election polling location, and approved updated language in an agreement between the county health department and Deaconess. The commissioners also heard a biannual update from Southwest Indiana Veterans Affairs on new state requirements for county veterans service offices.
