The Navy installation at Crane has officially been renamed Naval Weapons Station Crane (NWS Crane), a change that took effect December 1, 2025. Formerly known as Naval Support Activity Crane, the new name better reflects the base’s primary mission of weapons systems development, testing, and the storage of roughly 25 percent of the Department of Defense’s joint conventional munitions. Officials say the change aligns with recent growth and investment at the installation, as Crane continues to support advanced research, development, testing, and evaluation in partnership with Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division and Crane Army Ammunition Activity.
