
Dennis Joseph Gehl, 83, of Loogootee, Indiana passed away Tuesday January 13, 2026, at his residence.
He was born on August 5, 1942, in Loogootee, Indiana to Dr. Fred and Dorothy (Warnoch) Gehl.
He spent his childhood roaming the streets and woods of Loogootee, blessed were those times when children could safely explore. He enjoyed and loved life, photography, his dogs, and his friends and family. Living in Mexico on the Sea of Cortez was one of his favorite times in life. Dennis was a United States Army Veteran. He spent time serving his country and had a long and rewarding career history at the Naval Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana where he retired after 45 years. He attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Dennis was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW #9395 where he served on the house committee. Known as “Mr. D”, he had many friends and was loved by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Fred and Dorothy Gehl, and his brothers, Dr. Fredrick Gehl Jr., and Dr. Keith Gehl.
Dennis is survived by his son, Douglas Gehl, sister, Dr. Marsha Gehl, Dr. Steve Gehl, Dr. Jay Gehl, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held and burial and military rites will follow at a later date at St. John’s Cemetery.
