Knox County officials say Indiana’s new road funding law may require them to adopt a wheel tax to keep transportation dollars flowing. House Bill 1461 shifts part of road funding into a “lane-mile direct distribution” program, which counties can only access if they pass a local option highway user tax, combining a wheel tax and excise surtax on registered vehicles. Commissioner Kellie Streeter called the change “frustrating,” noting the new fees would apply to passenger cars, trucks, trailers, RVs, and other vehicles. Council President Mike Morris said county leaders plan to hold public meetings this fall to better understand the law before making a decision.
