Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has been confirmed in Daviess County for the first time since 2024. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health reports the virus was detected at a commercial turkey operation, where more than 30,000 birds will be depopulated. Officials have established a 6.2-mile control area and a surveillance zone extending more than 12 miles into portions of Daviess and Martin counties. Indiana is a major poultry producer, ranking first in duck production and third in both egg and commercial turkey production. Officials emphasize that avian influenza does not pose a food safety risk. The Board of Animal Health is also reminding dairy producers to follow federal testing requirements, including negative tests for lactating cattle before interstate transport, and has expanded milk surveillance efforts statewide.
