Inmate Found Unresponsive at FCI Terre Haute, Dies at Hospital

A federal inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution Terre Haute was found unresponsive Monday morning and later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Prison staff attempted life-saving measures and called EMS before transporting 45-year-old Caleb Allen Root for further treatment. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been notified, and officials say there is no danger to the public and no other injuries were reported. Root was serving a 120-month sentence for firearm and drug trafficking charges after being sentenced in the Northern District of Iowa and had been housed at FCI Terre Haute since June 2025.
