A large youth basketball tournament last weekend in Martin County delivered a major boost to the local economy. According to the Martin County Alliance for Economic Growth, the 76-team event drew an estimated 4,000 to 6,300 visitors to the area over two days as players, families, coaches, and supporters filled local restaurants, gas stations, stores, and shops. Based on conservative spending estimates, visitors likely spent between $350,000 and $900,000 during the weekend, with the potential to approach $1 million when factoring in food, fuel, shopping, and other purchases. Local officials say events like youth tournaments not only support small businesses but also generate tax revenue, increase community visibility, and help justify continued investment in local facilities.
