The City of Jasper will soon be searching for a new mayor following the announced resignation of Mayor Dean Vonderheide. In a letter to residents dated January 5, Vonderheide said he plans to step down from his position effective March 31, 2026. Vonderheide, who has served as mayor since 2018, said the decision comes after years of public service and is motivated by a desire to spend more time with family and focus on his health. While noting his pride in guiding the city through challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and major infrastructure and economic projects, Vonderheide said it is time to pass leadership to the next generation. City officials say the transition period will allow time for the selection of Jasper’s next mayor.
