Dubois County Poll Shows Overwhelming Opposition to Proposed Mid-States Corridor Project

mid-states

A public interest poll released in Dubois County shows strong local opposition to the proposed Mid-States Corridor project that would connect I-64 to I-69. According to 14News, 81% of respondents oppose the project, with 72% strongly opposed. Local officials say these numbers better reflect community sentiment than feedback reported at the state level. Jasper City Council President Philip Mundy said he has received overwhelming opposition from residents over the past several months, noting only one person contacted him in support of the project. The proposed roadway would span 23 miles through Dubois County as part of a larger corridor plan. Opponents cite concerns about cost, land use, safety, and long-term maintenance. The Dubois County portion alone is estimated to exceed $1 billion, or roughly $46 million per mile. Residents also worry the project could shift maintenance responsibility for U.S. 231 to the county, which officials say could strain already limited resources. Many residents are also concerned about the impact on farms and homes along the proposed route. Despite the poll results, INDOT says alternative options are still being evaluated and that public input will continue to be part of the planning process.
