Washington School Board Reviews Weather Delay Policies, Approves Personnel Actions

wcs

Washington’s School Board heard a report on criteria for weather-related school delays and closings, approved personnel recommendations, honored three staff members of the month, and heard a progress report on the elementary school renovation.

Superintendent Kevin Frank told the board members that several factors, including weather reports, road conditions, consultation with County Emergency Management and surrounding school systems, safety factors around buildings and grounds, and other factors, are looked at before a decision on a delay or school closing is announced.  For a more detailed look at the decision-making process, patrons can go to the Washington Community Schools website at

In personnel matters, the school board accepted resignations from junior high teacher Erik Browning, elementary teacher Christopher Lavely, and elementary instructional assistant Shealyn Siekmam.  The Board also approved hiring Jennifer Diaz as an elementary teacher on a temporary contract and Jana King and Yoana Salinas as elementary aides.  The Board also approved tutors for the iRead3 program and several ECA appointments.

In other business, the Board approved FFA trips to Louisville for a Farm Show and to the Leadership Development Workshop at Trafalgar, approved policy updates, and approved a lease with Riggle Farms.

The Board also recognized high school teacher Shannon Johnson, Veale Elementary food service supervisor Beth Milton, and bus driver Bobbi Byrer as employees of the month.  Each Employee of the Month received a Yeti tumbler and a $50 gift card presented by Tim Cochren of Habig Injury Law.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Jan. 15.
