Gregory D. Purcell, lovingly known as “Greg” to his friends and family, passed away on December 15, 2025, at the age of 77 in his hometown of Washington, IN. Born on February 25, 1948, to the late Dean H. and Joyce J. “Tilley” Purcell, Greg was a lifelong resident of Washington, a place he cherished and contributed to throughout his life.
As a proud graduate of Washington High School, Greg’s path in life was marked by service and dedication. His commitment to his community and his country began when he served in the U.S. Army, where he worked as a military policeman, a role he served with distinction and pride. Following his time in the service, Greg continued his service to others, working as the Washington dog catcher, followed by his tenure as a policeman in Crane, Indiana. Greg channeled his leadership and hard work into Schwan’s and later as the proprietor of his own business, J&G Landscaping, which flourished under his hands-on approach and determined work ethic.
More than just a businessman, Greg was a pillar in his community. His natural charisma and humor brought light into the lives of all who knew him. A fixture at the American Table where he would dine daily, his laughter and stories were as much a part of the ambiance as the food. Greg’s love of classic television was best represented in his adoration of M.A.S.H., a show that reflected his own blend of humor and humanity.
A man of passions, Greg was known for his love of everything related to Mustang cars, a hobby that fueled many an animated conversation. Yet it was his love for his family that truly defined him. He is survived by his children – Brad Purcell, Brittiany Stoll (Eric), Sierra LaBate (David), and Raymond Purcell (Kyrah) – and his cherished dog Sammy, who was a constant companion. His legacy continues in the lives of his 15 grandchildren: Dylan, Gaige, Faylynn, Gabriel, Noah, Aubrey, Zachariah, Evelyn, Faith, Serenity, Nehemiah, Mercy, Kevin, Graysan, Amaya, as well as one expectantly awaited new arrival. Greg was the heart of his family, and his guidance, love, and humor will be forever imprinted on their lives.
Beyond family, Greg had bonds forged in shared experiences and service. His brothers-in-arms from the VFW and the American Legion Post 121 knew him as a steadfast friend and ally. He was recently baptized at Greater Vision Church, a spiritual milestone that exemplified his deep faith and commitment to his beliefs.
Predeceased by his loving parents and six siblings, Greg’s love and friendliness will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered not just for the life he led, but for the lives he touched. Gregory D. Purcell’s enduring spirit will continue to inspire and comfort those he has left behind, as his memory is etched with fondness and reverence in the hearts of family, friends, and the community he adored.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, December 18, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Fredrick and Son-Gill Funeral Home. A service will follow at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Joshua Jones. Burial will conclude at Sugarland Memory Gardens with military honors. Memorial donations may be made to the Tunnel of Towers Foundation.
