Washington’s City Council heard a report on the finances of the Electric Department and took action on two ordinances at Monday night’s final Council meeting for 2025.
An ordinance setting up a new chapter in the City Code dealing with food trucks doing business in the city was approved by the council. With food trucks becoming more numerous, the Council established a fee schedule for event sponsors to pay for electricity used by food trucks.
The Council also heard the introduction of an amendment defining exempt properties outlined in the stormwater management regulations. The amendment will be up for final action at the first meeting in January.
The Council also heard a report on the financial status of Washington’s Electric Department. Kaitlyn Shaffer of Reedy Financial Services reported on a study on the cost of electric service and noted that the Electric Department has been “operating in the hole for the last couple of years.” Shaffer presented the Council a study outlining ten-year projections for the Utility. It has been seven years since any adjustment has been made on the city’s electric rates. The Council will review the report in a special meeting before deciding how to proceed.
In other business, the Council approved the 2026 holiday schedule for city employees.
At the end of the final meeting of 2025, Mayor Rhoads had this holiday message for Washington residents.
