The Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent surge in scam activity targeting community members through phone calls, emails, and online messages. Officials say scammers are using a variety of tactics, including fake prize claims, tech support alerts, investment schemes, and impersonation of law enforcement officers, to trick victims into sending money or gift cards or revealing personal information. The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to never send money or gift cards to strangers, verify all claims independently, and hang up immediately if something sounds suspicious.
Common scams include:
Fake “computer hacked” warnings demanding payment for repairs.
Scammers posing as friends or officials to build trust.
False claims of winning prizes or lottery money.
Calls pretending to be from the Sheriff’s Office, accusing victims of missing court and demanding “bond payments.” Authorities stress: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Residents are urged to warn friends and loved ones and report suspected scams to local law enforcement.
