The Sycamore Land Trust has completed construction of two new wetlands in Monroe County, restoring natural habitats and improving water quality along Beanblossom Creek. The wetlands will help filter water, store floodwaters, and provide breeding grounds for wildlife. Indiana has lost nearly 87% of its wetlands since settlement, and the project aims to reverse some of that loss. Funded through federal conservation programs and community support, the project included planting over 12,000 native trees and thousands of wetland plants grown from locally collected seeds. Sycamore has now protected more than 2,300 acres in the Beanblossom Creek Conservation Area, creating vital habitat for endangered species such as the Indiana bat and Kirtland’s snake.
