Indiana State Police Warn of Gift Card Phone Scam Threats

scam-alert-5

The Indiana State Police are warning residents about a new phone scam in which callers threaten harm and demand payment through gift cards. Authorities say scammers are using fake caller IDs, sometimes posing as law enforcement, government agencies, or even family members,  to trick victims into sending money. Police urge Hoosiers not to answer unfamiliar numbers and to verify any suspicious calls directly with the agency or person involved. Residents are reminded never to share personal information such as birth dates, Social Security numbers, or credit card details. Transactions made via prepaid cards or wire transfers are often impossible to recover. ISP encourages everyone to discuss these scams with family members and stay alert, noting that awareness is the best defense against fraud.
