Authorities are continuing to evaluate the environmental and community effects of a chemical fire that broke out Saturday at the PBTT facility near Newburgh. The fire, involving combustible metals such as magnesium, aluminum, and zinc, was fully extinguished early Sunday. While no hazardous materials have been detected leaving the property, runoff water entered nearby Vann Lake and is being tested. Officials warned some fish deaths are likely due to exposure to fire suppressants. The Warrick County Health Department has also cautioned residents to avoid contact with ash from the fire, which is testing at a high pH and may cause chemical burns. A cleanup plan is being developed, and residents who experience skin irritation or breathing issues are urged to seek medical attention. This is the second fire at the facility in less than a year, following a smaller incident in December.
