Washington’s City Council met Monday evening with an empty chair usually occupied by the late City Attorney, Tim Dant. At the opening of the Council meeting, during the usual moment of silence, Mayor Rhoads asked for prayers for Dant’s family. At the end of the meeting, the mayor spoke about Tim Dant’s service to his hometown.
During regular business, heard the reading of three ordinances setting next year’s pay schedule for the city’s employees, police officers, and firefighters. The Council will take final action on the proposed ordinances at the August 25th meeting. The Council also heard the introduction of an amendment to this year’s salary ordinance. Due to an employee of the Street Department being on medical leave, it was necessary to add an additional temporary position.
The only other item on the Council’s agenda was the replacement of the Council’s appointee to the Washington Carnegie Public Library Board. Current library board member Lee Hoefling resigned because he moved outside the library district. The Council approved Claire Gill as Hoefling’s replacement.
Following the council meeting, Washington’s Board of Public Works and Safety met with only three items on the agenda. The Board of Works approved the renewal of a two-year Energy Assistance memorandum with the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. The board also approved the renewal of an interlocal agreement with the Washington Community Schools providing a school resource officer from the police department. The terms of the agreement remain the same, with the schools funding the officer’s salary during the school year. Then the Board of Works also approved the renewal of the city’s contract with the Daviess County Economic Development Commission.
