Martin County Council to Hold Aug. 11 Hearing on Wheel Tax Proposal

martin-county-2

The Martin County Council will hold a public hearing today, August 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Martin County Community Building to consider adopting a County Wheel Tax and Vehicle Excise Tax. County officials say the move is necessary to remain eligible for state road and bridge funding after legislative changes reduced Indiana’s Community Crossings fund and required a wheel tax to access new Lane Mile Distribution funds. Since 2016, Martin County has received more than $7.7 million in state funding for road projects, with about $1.8 million in local matching funds. The proposed taxes would help fund highway construction, maintenance, and matching grants. The public hearing will be the opportunity for residents to ask questions or express concerns before the council votes.
