Dylan A. Smith, 32, of Vincennes, appeared in Knox Circuit Court Wednesday for the first time, facing a murder charge in the death of 30-year-old Taylor Hendershot. Smith pleaded not guilty and was appointed a public defender. Prosecutor Dirk Carnahan is seeking an enhanced murder charge, which could carry up to 85 years in prison. Before being assigned an attorney, Smith inquired about a change of venue and later asked if the county would consider a plea deal. No deal was offered, as his defense counsel was not present at the time. A jury trial is scheduled for November 4.
