This Weekend on Focus on the Community on WAMW, Washington City Council President Alan Brown will provide updates on several ongoing city projects and issues. Brown, who is in his 17th year on the council, will discuss the city’s proposed rental inspection ordinance, which is nearing finalization. The ordinance would require landlords to register each rental property and submit to a one-time safety inspection, aimed at improving housing conditions and giving the city the ability to follow up on tenant complaints. The council is also working through budget planning, while facing long-term financial uncertainties due to potential changes in property tax revenue. Washington’s sewer rates are also being reviewed. A phased increase is planned to support a $30 million wastewater treatment plant on the east side of the city, which is essential for future development, particularly around the I-69 corridor. Brown also provided an update on the ongoing Business 50 reconstruction. Other topics covered include ongoing upgrades to the city’s electric system, improvements at Longfellow Park, and the success of the Commons and local farmers market.
