AG Rokita Warns Hoosiers of Scams Following Severe Storm Damage

scam-alert-5

After severe weather swept across Indiana causing widespread damage, Attorney General Todd Rokita is warning residents to stay alert for scammers looking to take advantage of storm victims. Common scams include fake charities soliciting donations, fraudulent contractors demanding payment without completing repairs, and impostors posing as government or insurance representatives.

Rokita urges Hoosiers to protect themselves by:

Vetting cleanup and repair offers carefully.

Knowing FEMA never charges for aid applications.

Researching contractors and checking references or reviews.

Asking for proper identification, licenses, and proof of insurance.

Getting multiple estimates and insisting on written agreements.

Avoiding payment by wire transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or full upfront cash payments.

Suspected scams can be reported to the Consumer Protection Division at indianaconsumer.com or by calling 1-800-382-5516.
