
Charles Thomas Baumert, 82, of Washington, passed away during the night hours of May 11, 2025. He was born in Washington on May 26, 2025, to Robert F. and Camilla (Sturgeon) Baumert. On November 3, 1962, he married Beth Sedenquist They enjoyed the next 58 years together till her passing on January 7,2021. Tom served his country honorably in the US Air Force from 1960 till 1964 after discharge from the Air Force
He joined the Washington Police Department in 1965 as patrolman earning the position of Sargant and went on to serve as Police Captain in 1972 a position he held till he was promoted to Police Chief, serving in that position till 1984 when he became a Detective Captain a position he held till his retirement from the Washington Police Department. In 1987 he was elected mayor of Washington and was elected for 2 more terms serving as mayor from 1988 till 2003 Over the years during his working career and retirement he served positions on the Daviess County Growth Council Board Member, Daviess County Solid Waste District Board, Member of Southern Indiana Mayor’s Roundtable, Crane Regional Economic Development Organization, and Chairman of Southern Indiana Development Commission. Tom was a member of Washington American Legion, VFW Men’s Auxiliary, Moose Lodge, Knight of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Eagles, Fraternal Order of Police, Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, and AARP. Those left to mourn Tom’s passing include his sons, Charles A Baumert od Washington and Clifford T. (Audra ) Baumert of Dustin, Floridia; a grandson, Ryan Charles (Katie) Baumert of Washington; two great grandsons, Colton Baumert and Gunner Baumert both of Washington; five brothers, Robert ‘Bud’ (Ruth) Baumert of Washington, Richard L (Shirley) Baumert of Vincennes, Barry Baumert, William ‘Bill’ Baumert of Washington, and Danny M Baumert of Washington; one sister, Ruth Ann Wade of Bloomington.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F and Camilla Baumert; his wife, Beth Baumert; and a sister, Phyllis Brothers. Visitation for Tom will be at 11 AM till 1:00 pm, Tuesday, May 20,2025 at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington, Indiana,
Funeral serves will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at the Ed Lee Mortuary with Father Paul Ferguson and Yvonne Evans officiating
