
Arthur Spanger, a lifelong resident of Indiana, passed away on May 6, 2025, at the age of 91, in Vincennes, IN. Born on October 14, 1933, in Edwardsport, IN, to Carl and Frieda “Snyder” Spanger, Arthur lived a life marked by dedication, service, and the simplest joys rooted in farming, a testament to his hardworking spirit.
Arthur was a proud graduate of his local high school. His sense of responsibility led him to honorably serve in the Navy aboard the USS Bennington, a chapter of his life filled with pride and patriotism. On returning to his roots, he embraced his love for the land as a dedicated farmer, caring for the earth and its bounty with reverence.
His spirit will be cherished and kept alive by his niece Beverly Payne; nephew Loy (Reba) Spanger; great-nieces, Lori Spanger, Angela (Eric) Fossmeyer, Jamia, and Luis Jimenez, Kristen Payne; and great-nephew Jared (Marshal) Payne, as well as his doted-upon great-great-nieces and nephews Olivia and Ryan Payne, Avery Anderson, Noah Jones, Parker and Landen Jimenez will remember him as the embodiment of the strong and gentle guiding hand of their family.
Predeceased by his parents, his siblings, Roy, Bruce, Charles, David, Joan Louise Spanger, his nephew Jim Payne, and his beloved companion of 31 years, Alice Dick, Arthur now joins them, leaving behind a legacy of love and the fruits of his lifelong labors.
Arthur’s memory will be set against the backdrop of fields he once tended, under the wide Indiana sky, as a testament to a life well-lived and a man dearly loved.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel. A service will follow at 3:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Bryan Taylor. Burial will be held at Salem Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Salem UCC or a charity of choice.
