Indiana State Police and local law enforcement agencies are ramping up their efforts to ensure road safety during the Memorial Day weekend by participating in the “Click it or Ticket” enforcement campaign. With the assistance of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funds administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI), troopers will be on high alert for unrestrained passengers, dangerous driving, and impaired motorists.

To promote safe driving practices, the Indiana State Police have shared the following tips:

  1. Get adequate rest before embarking on your journey. Fatigue can impair your driving abilities.
  2. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to allow for quick response and prevent collisions.
  3. Always use your turn signals when changing lanes or making turns.
  4. Avoid lingering in the left lane unless you are actively passing or preparing for a nearby left turn.
  5. Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions while driving.
  6. Ensure that all passengers are properly buckled up for their safety.
  7. Never drink and drive. If you plan on consuming alcohol, designate a sober driver.

Motorists are urged to be vigilant and report any suspected impaired drivers to 911 immediately. When making a report, provide a detailed description of the vehicle, license plate number, location, and direction of travel.

By adhering to these safety tips and exercising caution on the roads, everyone can contribute to a safer Memorial Day weekend. Drive responsibly and help protect yourself and others during this holiday period.
