The Baseball sectionals got underway last night. The Washington Hatchets suffered a tough loss in the 3A tournament at Princeton falling to Pike Central 6-5. The second game went to Vincennes as they defeated the host Princeton Tigers 9-3. Pike Central will now face Vincennes in the semifinals on Monday, while Southridge plays Gibson Southern in the other match-up.
At Loogootee in 1A, Shoals eliminated Vincennes Rivet 9-6. Monday in the semifinals, North Daviess will play Loogootee at 10:30am, while Barr Reeve faces Shoals at 12:30pm. Follow the Vikings Monday afternoon on the General 95.9 / 101.3fm.
In 2A at Mitchell, Linton over South Knox 11-0, North Knox topped Paoli 11-4.
In the 3A Washington Softball Sectional Championship tonight, Pike Central will play Gibson Southern for the trophy. First pitch is set for 7pm at the Sports Complex.
Tecumseh will face NE Dubois for the 1A Softball Sectional title at NE Dubois. The winner will meet Barr Reeve in the regional on Tuesday.
At the girls tennis regionals at Jasper last night, the Washington Hatchets fell short to Jasper in the championship 5-0. The Lady Hatchets end another great tennis season at 23-2.
Boys track and field regionals are tonight at Evansville Central, good luck to our local teams and individuals tonight in the tournament.
The Indiana Fever fired coach Marianne Stanley Wednesday. Assistant coach Carlos Knox will take over as the interim head coach for the rest of this season. The Fever have lost five in a row to drop to 2-7. Interim general manager Lin Dunn said in a statement that “With this new group of players, it is time for our organization to go in a different direction.” Dunn added that it was a difficult decision. Stanley was 14-49 in two-plus seasons with the team. Knox will make his head coaching debut Friday night when the Fever host the L.A. Sparks at Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
Joey Votto homered and drove in three, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 at Great American Ball Park. Votto connected on a solo home run in the second, and followed with a two-RBI triple in the third, as the Reds came back from an early deficit to snap a two-game losing streak. The teams will conclude a four-game series Thursday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. Eastern, with Justin Steele starting for Chicago opposite Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene.
Jeimer Candelario blasted a 2-run home run in the top of the 10th, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2. Harold Castro had two solo homers for the Tigers, which avoided a sweep and snapped the Twins’ six-game winning streak. Minnesota loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but could not plate a run. Jake Burger crushed a 3-run home run in the fifth inning, and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-1. The Red Sox left 10 runners on base and had a six-game winning streak end. In Houston, the Astros beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1.
