Abby Ballengee advanced to state in pole vault in girls track and field. She finished second with a personal best and new school record 11 foot 3 inches. Congratulations! Elle Knepp was third in the 100-meter hurdles. Floyd Central, New Albany, and Forest Park were the top 3 teams in the regionals at Evansville Central yesterday.
Karlye Graber struck out 11 and pitched a shutout as the Barr Reeve Vikings claimed the 1A Softball Sectional championship defeating Loogootee at North Daviess 10-0. It was the first sectional title for Barr a Reeve Softball since 2013.
Washington bowed out of the post season tournament losing to Pike Central 11-1. Chloe Williams threw a no-hitter leading to the Charger win. In the other semifinal at Washington last night, Gibson Southern topped Princeton 18 to 3. Pike Central will play Gibson Southern for the championship at Washington tomorrow.
In 2A at South Knox, Linton was over Southridge 11 to 0, while Sullivan defeated South Knox 2 to nothing.
In the girls Tennis Regionals, Washington advanced to the championship tonight at Jasper with a 4 to 1 win over Loogootee. Jasper shut out Bloomfield 5 to nothing. So the Lady Hatchets will play Jasper tonight for the regional championship at Jasper.
Baseball sectionals start tonight, Washington plays Pike Central at Princeton at 6pm, live coverage can be heard on Memories 107.9fm. while Vincennes faces Princeton in game two.
At Loogootee tonight, Vincennes Rivet will play Shoals in the lone game
AT Mitchell in 2A, Linton plays South Knox, while Paoli faces North Knox in game two.
The Pro Bowl has been a football tradition since 1950, but now the NFL may be getting rid of it. The league is currently discussing ways to improve Pro Bowl week and looking for other ways to showcase their best players. Despite changes to the game’s rules in recent years, the Pro Bowl has lost a lot of interest amongst players and fans because there’s nothing at stake for the winners. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell simply tells us, “The game doesn’t work.” And there you have it from the boss.
The Chicago Cubs cruised to an 11-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Frank Schwindel went deep twice, including a 2-run shot in the first and a solo home run as part of a 5-run fifth inning. Chicago has won three straight after losing four in a row. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 at Busch Stadium. Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen homered twice and drove in four. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also homered for Toronto, and Kevin Gausman struck out eight over six shutout innings.
The University of Evansville named Butler assistant David Ragland as the Purple Aces’ next men’s basketball coach. The Evansville native takes over for Todd Lickliter, who was fired earlier this month after going 6-24 last season. Ragland was an assistant for former Butler coach LaVall Jordan this past season, and stayed on staff under new coach Thad Matta. He has also spent time as an assistant at Valparaiso, Indiana State, Utah State, Northern Kentucky and Bowling Green. The 41-year-old also previously was the head coach at Vincennes University.
The NFL Scouting Combine is returning to Indianapolis in both 2023 and 2024. The annual event for NFL Draft prospects has been held in Indianapolis since 1987, but was put up to a bid by the league. Indy beat out Dallas and Los Angeles to continue hosting the event. The matter was voted on at the league meetings in Atlanta. Visit Indy Senior VP Chris Gahl told WISH-TV the Combine generates nearly 10 million dollars in revenue annually for the city.
