The Washington Hatchet baseball team fell in their home opener last night to a good team from Evansville Mater Dei 8-2. Ashton Ostby pitched a good game with just one bad inning giving up six runs in the sixth that led to the Wildcat win. The Hatchets only mustered one hit on the day which was a double from Nick Sandullo. Washington falls to 1-2 on the season and plays Barr Reeve at home tomorrow.
The Barr Reeve Vikings grinded out a tough road win against a good Evansville Christian team 5-4. Ethan Stoll got the Win and Seth Wagler got the save. Colton Stoll had 2 hits and Reed Thompson added 2 RBI’s. The Varsity will play at Washington tomorrow and the BR JV is at home against North Daviess on Tuesday at 5:00 pm.
Washington Softball fell on the road to Forest Park last night 17-7 in the PAC Conference game. Kaitlin Hill hit her first career home run for Washington. The softball team is at home tomorrow against Heritage Hills.
The 2022 Indiana All-Stars basketball team was announced Monday, headlined by Westfield guard and Mr. Basketball Braden Smith. The future Purdue Boilermaker will be joined by Lawrence North’s CJ Gunn, Central Noble’s Connor Essegian, Chesterton’s Travis Grayson, Mt. Vernon’s Amhad Jarrard, Cathedral’s Tayshawn Comer and Jaxon Edwards, Carmel’s Pete Suder, Fort Wayne Northop’s Jalen Jackson, Warren Central’s Tae Davis, Silver Creek’s Branden Northern, Pike’s Ryan Conwell and Lafayette Jeff’s Javan Buchanan. Gary West Side’s Jalen Washington was also named to the team, despite missing the season due to a knee injury. The All-Stars will take on the Kentucky All-Stars June 10th and 11th.
Kansas beat North Carolina 72-69 in the NCAA men’s basketball title game in New Orleans on Monday, the program’s 4th national championship and the second for longtime coach Bill Self. But this was far from a surefire win for the No. 1 seed against the No. 8 seed. Kansas jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to start the game, but North Carolina soon settled in, going on a 16-0 run late in the half. Kansas trailed UNC by as many as 16 points in the first half and was down 15 at halftime. According to the NCAA, the 16-point comeback is the largest in title game history. Additionally, per the NCAA, the previous record for largest halftime deficit overcome in a men’s title game was 10, by Kentucky against Utah in 1998. This was the 10th appearance in the title game for Kansas, and the third under head coach Bill Self. This is his second title, the other coming in 2008.
The Indiana Pacers host the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday night in the final home game of the season. The Blue and Gold enter on a seven-game losing streak. Indiana has the fifth-worst record in the NBA at 25-54, and the franchise has not lost more than 54 games in a season since ending up 26-56 in 1986. Philadelphia is 48-30 and winners of two in a row. Tonight at halftime the 1A High School State Champion North Daviess Cougars will be rocognized at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The 76ers are favored by 12.5 points, with tip off at 7 p.m. Eastern.
