
The Washington Lady Hatchets made it seven wins in a row with a 51-38 win over Mater Dei last night in the opening game of the River City Showcase at USI. Kencia Lavasseurr had 19, Alaina Thorne 15, and Jesse Ledgerwood 13 to pace the Hatchets. Washington is off until Tuesday night when they return home to face Loogootee at the Hatchet House.

After playing to a tie in the first half, the Pike Central Chargers fell in their match up at the River City Showcase at USI losing to Evansville Central 56-40.

Junior High Boys Basketball, The 7th grade Hatchets turned up the defense against the Southridge Raiders resulting in a 50-21 win. Aiden Boyd paced the Hatchet scoring with 15 Points, followed by Levi Burkemper with 13 and 9 from Brody Armes. Other scorers were Jack Brower 6, Drew Jones 3, Caleb Bouchie 2 and Lyndon Evans 2. The 7th grade is now 3-1 on the season and will play at Mt Vernon tomorrow afternoon.
The 8th grade Hatchets improved to 4-0 on the season with a 55-33 victory over the Raiders. Cordell Turner lead the Hatchets scoring with 23 points followed by Brody Isza with 10 and 9 from Xavion Lesure. Other scorers were Trey James 7, Brody Clark 2 and Ben Merold 2. The 8th grade will also travel to Mt Vernon on Saturday.
The Washington Hatchet Wrestling team fell to Princeton Wednesday 42-24 in their first home meet of the year. The Hatchets will be back in action tomorrow participating in an 8 team North Knox Invitational. Start time 9:30 at North Knox High School gymnasium.
The second-ranked Purdue Boilermakers welcome Iowa to Mackey Arena Friday night to begin Big Ten play. With a victory, Purdue would likely become number one in the AP Top 25 for the first time ever on Monday. The matchup of undefeated teams promises to be high scoring. The Hawkeyes and Boilers are the two highest scoring squads in the nation through seven games, with 94 and 92.4 points per game, respectively. Iowa’s Keegan Murray is second in the country with 24.6 points per game. Purdue has a balanced attack with six players averaging more than nine per game, led by Zach Edey with 16.9 points. The Boilermakers are favored by 12.5 points, with tip off at 9 p.m. Eastern at Mackey Arena.
The Indiana Pacers will try to snap a three-game losing streak Friday night at home against the Miami Heat. Indiana has lost four out of five to fall to 9-15. The Pacers fell to Atlanta Wednesday night after a no-call cost Pacers guard Chris Duarte a chance at go-ahead free throws in the final seconds. Miami enters the game 13-9, although the Blue and Gold beat the Heat in overtime in October. Pacers point guard T.J. McConnell will be out indefinitely with a wrist injury after he left Wednesday’s loss to the Hawks. Miami will be without All-Stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, as well as former Pacers star Victor Oladipo due to injury. Indiana and Miami tip off at 7 p.m. Eastern at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in the second game of a six-game homestand.
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for the second straight month Thursday. The second-year back leads the NFL in rushing with 1,204 yards and 14 touchdowns. Taylor has rushed for a touchdown in nine straight games and he’s the only player in the NFL with over one thousand yards rushing. He’s the first offensive player in team history to win the award multiple times in the same season. Indianapolis looks to get back in the win column Sunday against division foe Houston. The Texans are 2-9 and have the second-worst run defense in the NFL. The Colts are 6-6, and easily beat the Texans 31-3 at Lucas Oil Stadium in October behind 145 yards and two touchdowns from Taylor. Indy is favored by 10 over Houston, with kickoff Sunday at 1 at NRG Stadium.
